Art Club | Summer Edition: Week 1

We are in the second half of summer and filling our weeks up with Art Club sessions!  Emily has been so kind as to host these fun creative adventures at School House Farm, providing a beautifully inspiring and open space for our energetic artists.  The week kicked off with Abstract Acrylic Painting on Canvasses, followed by our Gift Wrap session, and ending with Indigo.   I was really excited for the new Gift Wrapping session (I'm probably going to renamed it That's A Wrap because I'm just into fun names for things...) which turned out super fantastic!!!  I will definitely have to get my hands on a few more Pom Pom makers as those were definitely a favourite by far.  The Acrylic Painting always puts me on edge because of the permanence and all the accidental squeezing too much paint or possible end game of BROWN FROM MIXING ALL THE COLOURS, but as you will see, they all turned out uniquely awesome in every way.  Indigo was indigo, a lot of impatience and aversion to the smell, but inevitably always worth the end product!

In Bloom: School House Farm

It is mid-May and these sunny days are still far and few between.  Like a sunflower, I find myself following and reaching out to absorb the sun's warmth whenever we get a sunny day or even a few peeks of sun in and out of these moody weather spells.  It's been insufferable, but despite the sun's absence, Spring has still managed to bring about life and colour to cheer us all up.  School House Farm has been toiling to get new things growing for the local community and anyone venturing from beyond South Delta.  Beautifully colored eggs from happy roaming chickens are gathered and washed lovingly for the regulars.  Emily's first test of florals were such a hit, I think everyone is already dancing around for when she grows an army for next Spring.  Fields are being tilled and herbs and veggies are sprouting in their newly built greenhouses.  Easter's chicks have doubled in size and will be joining the rest of the gang soon enough.  So much life and beauty in this wide open space, the future holds much for this little gem.

The Ladner Village Market is just around the corner.  Looking forward to see these guys reap what they sow this coming Summer.

The Hasties

There are no words to describe just how proud I am of my amazing friend, Emily.  Over the past couple of years, I've listened to her speak passionately on numerous occasions of her dreams and goals on the farm.  There has never been a doubt in my mind that she could not achieve any of the things on her growing list, it has basically been a waiting game as she began paving her way.  I've seen her spread at her thinnest: working tirelessly with her chickens and crops, taking care of her family including an exchange student and a friend in need, working her part-time job (consisting of multiple graveyard shifts in a row, no less...), to finally see her momentum up brings me so much joy.  You reap what you sow, and all this girl serves up is love.  Thanks to everyone who has made the time to come out to Schoolhouse Farm over the past couple of weeks to support this lady with a heart of gold.

In celebration of her massive crop of sunflowers, a session was definitely a must...

Sunflower Madness

DRUMROLL PLEASE!!!  I'm so excited to announce my girl Emily is officially selling her homegrown veggies and florals, all which have been an intensive labour of love!  After recently setting up at a few of the local markets, she pitched her stand up at home to take part in Experience Delta's Culinary Farm Tour.  She collaborated with One20 Public House for a true Farm to Table experience for all those coming through.  Chef Michael Ferreira created a vegan taco, exclusively using the vegetables grown from the farm which included standouts of a guacamole alternative using minted mashed peas and deliciously crispy garlic chips.  In addition to her produce and floral stand and the delicious tacos, her two giant rows of sunflowers were open to the public for picking!

Come out this weekend for a break from the city, pick up some fresh produce, grab a bouquet of fragrant sweet peas and bring home as many giant sunflowers as you can carry!  Feel free to bring a blanket and some snacks for a cozy picnic, there will be a lemonade stand set-up to wet your whistle!

Hope to see you this weekend!
